13/03/19: Skewen Vs Nant y ffyllon District D Cup Semi Final

On Wednesday the 13th of March Skewen travelled to TATA to take on Division 2 high flyers Nantyffllon in the semi-final of the newly formed District D Cup.

Skewen took the opportunity to mix a blend of experience and youth in a side looking to turn around a series of negative results and performances.

Skewen took the early lead with a try in the first 5 minutes by Jonathan Vaughan converted by Sion King.

With good ball retention by the forwards and quick handling by the backs Nanty found it difficult to get a foothold in the game. Skewens possession and territorial advantage paid dividends with 2 more tries before the 20 minute mark. The first of which, a pushover try by Ed Price followed  a series of dominant scrums went unconverted. The second a searing break by full back Mark Harvey feeding wing Sam Collins who wrong footed the Nanty defence to score under the post, converted by Sion King.

Two more followed before Half time, a second for Jonathan Vaughan came from a driving maul converted by Sion King, the other again from a dominant scrum saw No 8 Ed Price pick and feed scrum half Jaimie Kirkhouse who outpaced the defence to score out wide.

Half Time Skewen 31 Nantyfflyllon 0

The second half proved much the same as the first with good phase play and ball retention by the forwards and enterprising use of possession by the backs which meant that any possession Nanty had was limited.

Further tries by 2nd Row James Price, scrum half Jaimie Kirkhouse and 2 by youth winger Ki Morgan saw Skewen take total control. Not to be outdone by the juniors Kevin Kipper James a replacement 2nd row rolled back the years to race in from 55 yards for Skewens final try

Full time Skewen 53 Nantyffyllon 0

The game and result was exactly what was required following a series of lacklustre defeats and dwindling efforts in mid-week training. In fairness to Nantyffyllon despite the result they continued to fight to the end. Despite the fact that the spine of the team was aged 30 plus it was good to see how the blend of experience and youthful exuberance paid dividends with excellent performances from our youth team players Will Pope, Callum Grimes and KI Morgan all of whom showed they will be a force to be reckoned with in the not too distant future.

We now know that we are to face Porthcawl in the final on a date and venue yet to be fixed.  With 5 league games to go we still have the opportunity to redeem a somewhat disappointing season, but we also have the opportunity of some silverware. Let us hope that the effort, commitment and style showed in this game will be taken forward to give us a successful end to our season.
